$10M AIRPORT PROJECTS INCLUDE TERMINAL REDEVELOPMENT

Mackay Airport terminal is set for a $2 million revamp as one of two major projects worth a total of $10 million get underway next year.

The second project is a runway overlay at a cost of $8 million.

Mackay Airport Pty Ltd (MAPL) General Manager, Terry Simpson, said that in the new terminal design the central concourse will become part of a much larger departure lounge. To enable this the passenger screening point will be relocated from its current position to the front of the central concourse, enhancing the customer experience and comfort.

"This layout will allow for an increase to the food and beverage offer for airport patrons, with various eateries, snack stores, coffee shops and bars inside as well as a snack outlet outside the security area," Mr Simpson said.

"It is proposed that a convenience store, newsagent, gift and souvenir shop will also be included within the secure area to further cater for passenger’s needs."

"The airport’s observation area is something the Mackay people enjoy very much and it will remain a feature of the redeveloped terminal."

Mr Simpson said work on the redevelopment will start as soon as possible, with consultation with stakeholders already underway and Expressions of Interest to be called for in early January 2010.

MAPL Manager Terminal Services, Sheryl de Bruyn, who will be managing the project, said that the redevelopment is very exciting for the airport and its patrons and is the first major upgrade since the terminal was refurbished in 2004.

"The project will be staged to ensure minimal disruption for airport users and it is expected it will be completed by the end of next year," Ms de Bruyn said.

The $8 million runway overlay also planned for Mackay Airport is expected to commence in May 2010.

"This project will ensure the ongoing integrity of the runway and its ability to meet the demands of the growing number of aircraft movements at Mackay Airport," Mr Simpson said.

"Again the works will be staged to ensure the airport remains fully operational throughout the process and they are expected to be completed within six months."
