Getting to know Mackay
Monday, 09 August 2004

Mackay is a city on the eastern coast of Queensland, Australia, about 900 kilometres north of Brisbane, on the Pioneer River. Mackay is nicknamed the sugar capital of Australia because its region produces more than a third of Australia's cane sugar. The city has an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius.

It encompasses secluded islands and beaches, spectacular rainforests and national parks, pristine coral reefs, exciting fishing spots, historical townships, genuine country hospitality, scenic drives, great shopping and accommodation. The region is home to a variety of exotic wildlife such as the platypus and dugong, rare birds and butterflies. The picturesque landscape includes dramatic coastal scenery, highland waterfalls, gorges and mountains, and lush lowlands which are home to Mackay’s famous sugar plantations. Away from the coast, and beyond the ranges, Queensland’s vast Outback beckons with an intriguing cultural heritage and the traditional authentic, warm Aussie welcome of small towns such as Nebo, Moranbah, Capella, Dysart, Middlemount, Glenden and Clermont.
